LESOTHO’S AI VISION TAKES CENTER STAGE AT MINISTERIAL ROUND TABLE

Minister of  Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms. Nthati Moorosi, also Chairperson of the African Union’s Special Technical Committee on Communication and Information Communication Technologies (AU STC-CICT), delivered an impactful virtual address yesterday at the Ministerial Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence for Africa.
The meeting was held on the eve of the upcoming World Congress 2025, which is set to commence on Tuesday 4th March to  Thursday March 6, 2025.
In her address, Ms Moorosi highlighted the newly developed and validated Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy of Lesotho, emphasizing its alignment with the Africa Continental AI Strategy. The policy aims to integrate AI technologies into various sectors of the nation’s economy and society, enhancing growth and innovation across the region.
“Today, we stand on the brink of a digital transformation that has the potential to elevate our economies and societies. Lesotho’s AI policy not only positions us at the forefront of this revolution but is also aligned with our commitment to the continental strategy,” said Ms. Moorosi.
During the roundtable, she underscored the significance of collaboration among African nations and their partners in advancing AI initiatives across the continent. She extended her gratitude to Smart Africa and its allies for their contributions toward fostering an environment conducive to AI innovation.
Furthermore, Ms Moorosi advocated for the establishment of the Pan African AI Council, proposing the inclusion of the African Union Commission for Infrastructure and Energy. This body, she argued, would strengthen Africa’s voice in essential global discussions, particularly during platforms like the G20 Ministerial Meeting for Digital Economy.
“To truly amplify Africa’s voice in the global digital economy, we must work collectively, leveraging our unique perspectives and innovative solutions. The inclusion of the AU Commission for Infrastructure and Energy will bolster our efforts to navigate the complex digital landscape,” she asserted.
Lastly, she emphasized that Lesotho is committed to leveraging AI as a tool for empowerment, sustainable development, and inclusivity. She reiterated the importance of ethical innovation, stating, “We must ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to all, creating pathways for growth that are equitable and just across our continent.”
As the World Mobile Congress 2025 kick starts on Tuesday, She hopes Lesotho’s proactive stance on AI and its integration into national policies serves as an inspiring example for other nations. And that the discussions held at this Ministerial Roundtable reflect a growing recognition of the vital role that technology will play in shaping Africa’s future.
