The office of the auditor General has launched its five years’ strategic plan for the year 2026-2031 in fulfilment of its renewed commitment to strengthening public sector accountability, transparency and good governance in the country.
Highlighting the insights of this strategic report, the Auditor General Ms. ‘Mathabo Makenete indicated that the strategic plan set out her office’s direction for the next five years, which is anchored on four key priorities inclusive of strengthening the functionality and financial independence of office of the Auditor General, improving it’s audit coverage and impact, enhancing audit quality while also cultivating institutional, organizational as well s professional excellence of the office.
She said the Strategy provides a clear roadmap for enhancing the effectiveness and relevance of public sector auditing through improved audit methodologies, expanded oversight coverage, stronger stakeholder engagement, and the delivery of greater value to citizens and Parliament. She cited that it also reaffirms her office’s commitment to promoting sound public financial management and supporting the effective use of public resources in the interest of all Basotho.
On the same note, Deputy Auditor General Mr Paul Letlela reiterated that this Strategy has been developed through an extensive, participatory and evidence-based process. He highlighted that It was informed by internationally recognised institutional assessments, including the Supreme Audit Institution Performance Measurement Framework and the Institutional Capacity Building Framework, both through IDI and AFROSAI-E.
Mr Letlela also noted that these assessments enabled the office to objectively evaluate its institutional performance, identify capacity gaps, and benchmark it against international good practice. He said the process also involved extensive stakeholder consultations with Parliament, Government Ministries, development partners, oversight institutions, professional bodies, civil society organisations, and the staff of the office.
The international partners from both IDI and AFROSAI-E commended Lesotho through the office of the auditor General for this significant milestone. They said, this strategic document will aid the office of the auditor General as Supreme Audit Institution in the country align itself with global advancements. They Cited that it’s counterparts across the world are evolving, embracing digital technologies, undertaking information systems audits, auditing environmental sustainability, climate change, public procurement, infrastructure development and other emerging areas that directly affect citizens.
The strategic plan will require over 339 million Maloti running budget for these five years, however due to lack of financial support, the office is currently running funding gap of 183 million maloti to its execution. The office called upon various stakeholders for support in bridging this financial gap to help achieve it’s set mandate.
