In a move that promotes his government’s commitment to inclusive governance and accountability, the Prime Minister (PM) Mr Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane met with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Maseru to discuss strategies for improving service delivery and addressing pressing national challenges.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the vital role civil society plays in bridging the gap between government and communities. “It is only right that we meet with civil society to understand their role in governance,” he said.
“When I took office, I promised to work hand in hand with everyone to make Lesotho a better place, that commitment still stands. I continue to invite all Basotho to come forward and help shape solutions that benefit every citizen,” he said.
Prime Minister stressed that collaboration, transparency, and dialogue are key pillars of good governance, noting that a united approach can bring lasting progress in tackling issues such as poverty and unemployment.
Speaking on behalf of the civil society sector, Mr Sekonyela Mapetja from the Lesotho Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (LCN) expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for engaging directly with them. He said such platforms are crucial in ensuring that community voices are heard at the highest level of leadership.
“We appreciate that the Prime Minister values our input,” Mr Mapetja said. “As civil society, we are deeply rooted in communities and understand the daily struggles Basotho faces. Our responsibility is to guide and support the government where needed, so that policies reflect the realities on the ground.”
The meeting is seen as a positive step toward strengthening democratic governance and accountability. Many hope it will pave the way for stronger partnerships between government and civil society, especially in advancing national priorities such as health, education, and youth empowerment.
The Prime Minister’s engagement with civil society aligns with his broader reform agenda aimed at building a transparent, inclusive, and responsive government, one that puts the needs of Basotho at the heart of decision-making.
