The government of the Kingdom of Lesotho through the Ministry of Law and Justice in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched the Project on Technologies for Community Development today.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr Richard Ramoeletsi outlined that the launch of the Project on Technologies for Community Development in Lesotho aims to support inclusive development by using technology, innovation, and strong institutions.
He emphasised that the project will use intellectual property systems and patent information to find and adapt technologies that meet the needs of local communities.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Law and Justice, through the Registrar General’s Office, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lerotholi Polytechnic to lead the technical work.
A steering team of government, academic, and community representatives will guide the project, while a dedicated project team, supported by WIPO experts, will handle daily activities.
“This initiative will not only deliver demonstration-ready prototypes tailored to community needs, but also build a foundation for future replication, commercialization, and policy integration,” the Minister noted. “It is a catalyst for leveraging intellectual property and technology to address poverty, enhance livelihoods, and promote sustainable development.”
Mr. Purevdorj Vaanchig, the Senior Counsellor at WIPO stated that WIPO focuses on practical projects that deliver clear results within 12 to 18 months, using intellectual property to create real benefits for communities. This project reflects that approach by directly involving the Ha Lejone community so their needs and ideas guide the work.
