LESOTHO HOLDS FIRST NATIONAL SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND INNOVATION FORUM

 The Government of Lesotho through the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology, and Innovation, hosted the 1st National Science Technology Forum at State Library American Corner Maseru.
The forum focused on the theme “STI as Catalysts in Digital Transformation for Inclusive Economic Growth.”
The forum was aimed to deliberate how Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) can drive Lesotho’s economic development.
Presentations included subjects such as AgriTech, Digital Finance, Food Tech, and the Digital Transformation Strategy (2024-2030).
Mrs Mats’epo Nkhi, the Acting Director of Department of Science, delivered opening remarks at Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Forum on behalf of Principal Secretary Mr Kanono Ramashamole indicating that this forum reflects Lesotho’s commitment to science, technology, and innovation for national development.
“The launch of the Digital Transformation Strategy shows the country’s goal to build inclusive digital infrastructure, support e-governance, encourage innovation, and involve the private sector and youth”, she said.
She further stated that a key achievement is the High-Performance Computing System in Mohale’s Hoek, which will support advanced research, artificial intelligence, and data analysis.
” Another milestone is the upcoming Lesotho Research and Education Network, which will connect local institutions to international knowledge platforms”, she added.
Mrs Nkhi also stated that Lesotho is also proud that three young women from Lerotholi Polytechnic will represent the country at the UbuntuNet Women Hackathon 2025, highlighting progress in female participation in technology.
The Director of ICT in the Ministry, Mr Khiba Masiu spoke about the government’s plan for digital transformation under the Digital Transformation Strategy – Agenda 2030.
He explained that Phase 1 involved building digital infrastructure, such as the high-level Data Centre in Mohale’s Hoek and setting up 15 communication towers. While Phase 2 focuses on expanding internet access in rural areas, laying fibre networks, and improving digital government services.
He said Lesotho’s strengths include strong support in the NSDP II, wide mobile broadband coverage, and a high adult literacy rate. He added that there are opportunities such as strong government support, young and entrepreneurial population, and partnerships with regional and international bodies like SADC and the AU.
He also shared the five focus areas for the next five years:
1. Digital Government
2. Digital Business
3. Digital Population (skills and capacity)
4. Digital Infrastructure
5. Cybersecurity and Innovation.
On her closing remarks, the Director of Science, Mrs Nkhi thanked everyone who took part in the Science, Technology and Innovation Forum. “It was a valuable learning experience, and I believe we have all gained something meaningful. I hope this forum leads to real action and progress, she said. She further gave special thanks to UNESCO and American Corner Maseru for their support in making this event possible.
