The Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, received on behalf of the Kingdom of Lesotho the newly renovated Mamoeketsi Primary School, handed over by Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, Mr Tom Hines.
The project, implemented through a partnership between the United States Department of Defense and Lesotho’s Ministry of Education and Training, has delivered a modern science laboratory, renovated sanitation facilities, repaired roofing for seven classrooms, a protective perimeter fence, and a rainwater harvesting system.
Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo expressed appreciation for the continued support of the United States Embassy to the education sector, noting that this was not the first intervention of its kind, citing previous assistance to schools in Maputsoe Community in 2023 as well as St Philomena, Loretto and Likotsi LECSA schools in 2019.
He said the new infrastructure would leave a lasting legacy and position the school to nurture the next generation of leaders. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to providing quality education and enhancing teacher development, science training and technology advancement.
Learners were encouraged to study hard and embrace opportunities created through the shared vision of empowering children and strengthening community development.
Adding a sporting gesture to the celebration, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo presented two soccer balls and two netballs to the school, highlighting the importance of sports in holistic development.
He further announced plans to construct a large swimming pool in collaboration with the Lesotho Defence Force, aimed at equipping Basotho children with swimming skills and opening doors to international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
Mr Hines described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of Basotho children, rooted in partnership, trust and shared values between the two nations.
The ceremony was marked by vibrant songs and traditional dances performed by learners, reflecting a spirit of unity and hope as great strides continue to be made through cooperation between Lesotho and the United States of America.
