The Ministry of Education and Training received 400 laptops and other IT gadgets from the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through its Embassy in Maseru.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, said the donation follows a meeting held in Cape Town where developed countries pledged support to Lesotho in an effort to enhance Information Technology (IT) education.
He further indicated that the donation of 400 computers is the first of its kind, noting that it will significantly contribute to improving IT studies in schools countrywide.
He stated that the computers will initially be distributed among 10 primary schools and later the Ministry will decide allocation of the remaining 100 laptops to two additional schools, bringing the total number of beneficiaries schools to 12.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Government of the United Arab Emirates, the UAE Embassy Counsellor, Ms. Fatima Al Suwaidi, said the donation reflects her country’s commitment to support education and digital transformation in Lesotho.
She emphasized that education remains a key pillar of sustainable development and expressed hope that the equipment will empower learners with essential digital skills needed Globally.
Ms Al Suwaidi further reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Lesotho and supporting initiatives that promote innovation and capacity building in the education sector.
In conclusion, one of the beneficiaries, the Principal of St. James Primary School Mrs. ‘Malipuo Molapo, appreciated the donations and said they will benefit both their students and teachers to enhance teaching and learning process in sharpening IT knowledge and access to information which will profitably improve their academic performance.
