THE GOVERNMENT OF LESOTHO IS CALLING ON BASOTHO TO CONSERVE WATER, DESPITE THE M200 MILLION BUDGETED FOR EL NINO RESPONSE MEASURES.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry appealed to relevant stakeholders including community leaders, farmers and civil society organisations(CSO) to strengthen the preparedness with regard to the anticipated weather changes.
This is according to the statement made by the minister of Environment and Forestry Mr Thabo Mofosi concerning the anticipated weather conditions where he stated that most parts of the country will receive below normal rainfall,whereas more rain is anticipated in the months of January to March 2027.
Mr. Mofosi stated that in a same manner massive heat is expected country wide especially in the lowlands, urging that it is every Mosotho’s responsibility to preserve water and take necessary precautions, however stating that the country may experience heavy rains and storms which can destroy crops and property.
Meanwhile, the ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has held consultations with the Sustainable Development Goals portfolio committee to discuss the country preparedness for the El Nino season 2026/27, where the ministry of agriculture has committed a budget plan of two hundred million maloti for El Nino response.
Development partners’ projects such as SADP, ICOV, WAMPCO will play a part in combating the EL NINO effects in the country.
