Part of the Principal Chiefs say that the commemoration of King Moshoeshoe’s anniversary must change in form, moving away from merely gathering people for celebrations and dancing, and instead focusing on ways to carry out development work within communities.
The Principal Chief of Ha Mamathe, Chief Sempe Masupha, said that as an individual he no longer has interest in attending such celebrations because they often give politicians influence over them, even though they are the rightful heirs of the nation of Lesotho and descendants of King Moshoeshoe.
He further stated that districts should be given the opportunity to commemorate this day through community development activities in their respective areas.
Chief Joel Mots’oene of Leribe also of the same sentiments, saying that as chiefs they must come together to transform how Moshoeshoe Day is commemorated.
He added that Moshoeshoe himself worked to improve the lives of the people, and therefore the commemoration of his day should reflect similar values, improving the livelihoods of Basotho in villages and communities across the country.
