The government has assured Basotho that it remains committed to addressing the economic impacts of the ongoing Middle East conflict, despite presenting the 2026/2027 budget estimates amid global economic uncertainty.
This was stated by Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, when moving that the Appropriation (2026/2027) Bill, 2026 be read for the third time in the National Assembly.
Dr. Matlanyane indicated that while the Bill is passed at a time when the full economic effects of the war remain uncertain, government will make necessary adjustments as circumstances evolve, particularly in light of anticipated increases in gas and fuel prices.
She emphasised that the Appropriation Bill is not static, but a working document that can be amended in response to emerging challenges.
The Minister further assured that essential services will remain accessible, noting that the 2026/2027 budget is designed as a strategic tool for economic recovery, accelerated service delivery and to help the country withstand global instability.
Dr. Matlanyane also said government has taken into account concerns and contributions raised by Members of Parliament, committing to implement the budget with discipline, transparency and accountability.
She stressed that execution of the budget will align with public financial management principles and national priorities.
“We cannot afford delays or inefficiencies. Let us respect the public and ensure that their funds are used for the benefit of the nation,” she said.
Dr. Matlanyane acknowledged the role played by key stakeholders, including the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Members of Parliament and civil servants, for their dedication during the budget process.
Meanwhile, Members of Parliament supported the passing of the Bill, highlighting the need for ongoing adjustments in response to global conflicts and emphasizing prudent use of public funds.
The Appropriation (2026/2027) Bill, 2026 was subsequently read for the third time and passed by the House.
