The Leader of Revolution for Prosperity (RFP), Mr. Ntsokoane Sam Matekane who is the Prime Minister-designate paid a courtesy call on the outgoing Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro in his offices at Qhobosheaneng Complex on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Press Attaché, Mr. Buta Moseme confirmed that there was this pre-handover meeting in which the outgoing Prime Minister, Dr Majoro had invited the RFP Leader for the consultative meeting.
He described the meeting as historic in nature, saying it was preparing for a smooth power transition.
‘’The outgoing Prime Minister saw it necessary to invite Mr. Matekane for a consultative meeting as part of preparations for a smooth power transition,’’ he highlighted.
Mr. Moseme however remarked that there would still be the official handover between the incoming and outgoing Prime Minister.
Lesotho held the National Assembly elections on October 07, 2022, where RFP obtained 56 constituencies out of the 80 and could not get Proportional Representation (PR) seats.
RFP which was only formed in March 2022 prior to the general elections failed to secure 61 seats out of the total 120 parliamentary seats to rule the country alone.
It was therefore forced to partner with other political parties to form a Coalition Government and these include the Alliance of Democrats (AD) which has a total of five seats drawn from two constituencies plus three PR seats and the Movement for Economic Change (MEC) which has a total of four seats from one constituency and three PR seats.
The three political parties together have accumulated a total of 65 seats which will allow them to govern.
This will be the fifth coalition government in Lesotho since 2012 after the All Basotho Convention formed a Coalition Government with the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) under the premiership of Dr Motsoahae Thomas Thabane.
