In the margins of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) Digital Roadshow, the Minister of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation Ms. Nthati Moorosi on Friday led a delegation to a cyber security awareness event held at Zenon High School at Sefikeng in Berea district.
In his remarks, the District Administrator for Berea Mr. Phahlane Makoko expressed hope that the roadshow will bring much-needed awareness and education to the community, noting that Sefikeng still lags behind in several aspects of technological advancement.
He indicated that limited access to digital tools and insufficient knowledge on cyber safety continue to expose communities to risks such as online scams and misinformation.
He added that initiatives such as the CTO digital roadshow play a critical role in bridging the digital divide by equipping communities with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the digital space safely and productively.
On the other hand, the Member of Parliament for Ts’oana Makhulo constituency Mr. Teboho Nots’i highlighted that effective use of technology depends largely on strong digital connectivity, particularly through mobile networks.
He pointed out that in some areas, network coverage remains poor, limiting access to online services and opportunities.
He mentioned that improving infrastructure and expanding network coverage should be prioritized to ensure that all Basotho, regardless of location, can fully participate in the digital economy.
Speaking on the purpose of the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Lesotho Communications Authority Mr. Nizam Goolam said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that Basotho, irrespective of their geographical location, benefit from technology and digital transformation.
He indicated that the campaign focuses on raising awareness about cyber security, promoting responsible internet usage, and empowering citizens with knowledge to protect themselves against cyber threats while embracing digital opportunities.
At this event, the attendees were expected to break into three forums whereby awareness was to be made for teacher, students and the general community which includes parents, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
