GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO REFORMS

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Justice Nthomeng Majara says even though there are challenges facing national reforms progress, the government remains committed towards the realisation of this initiative.

The DPM who is also Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs said this when sharing the journey on reforms since the formation of this new government at a press conference held in Maseru on Friday.

She said after holding several consultations with all reforms stakeholders that include the opposition and government recent meeting with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) oversight committee, their anticipation was that the ‘Omnibus Bill’ would be presented soon in Parliament.

She, however, explained that several efforts and invites to liaise with opposition to come for a consensus meeting in preparation for this have so far become futile as members said they are busy preparing for September 2023 Local Government Elections.

She promised the nation that through her office, she will issue another invite, expressing hope that things will go well this time.

Justice Majara said this means that some parties are signing up to the deal and others are not. However, she said though this is a worrying factor, the composition of the 11th Parliament gives them much hope as opposed to the 10th Parliament.

She expressed hope that when the PM attends SADC Summit on August 17, 2023, business that needs a two-thirds majority would have been moved. However, the ones which need referendums will take a little bit longer.

During her presentation, the Minister was accompanied by the acting Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Lira Ralebese while the presser was attended by both private and state media.

National reforms are reported to be a process meant to transform seven thematic areas that include the constitution, national security, justice, public service and media among others as a means to attain political stability in Lesotho.
