The government of Lesotho will convene two major national events aimed at strengthening leadership, promoting accountability and transparency, and improving public service delivery.
Announcing the initiative in a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara said the events, namely the National Leadership Retreat and the Accountability Summit, will be held from June 21 to 23 and July 1 to 3 respectively.
She said both events will be held under the theme: “Building Stronger Communities through Leadership, Accountability and Results-Oriented Service Delivery.”
According to Justice Majara, the National Leadership Retreat will provide government leaders with an opportunity to assess national progress, strengthen intergovernmental coordination, address implementation challenges, review service delivery performance and agree on priority actions aimed at accelerating the achievement of national development goals.
She noted that the Accountability Summit will serve as a national platform for engagement between government and citizens. The summit will enable Basotho to hear directly from their leaders, ask questions, share experiences, provide feedback on public services and contribute to shaping national development priorities and solutions.
“These events reflect the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, citizen participation, responsive governance and improved public service delivery,” she said.
Justice Majara further recalled that in his inaugural address, Prime Minister emphasized the need to strengthen governance systems and institutions to ensure accountability, responsiveness to citizens’ needs, effective service delivery and the eradication of corruption.
She said the Prime Minister has consistently reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a capable, transparent and accountable public sector that delivers tangible results for all Basotho.
The Deputy Prime Minister also indicated that, in pursuit of these objectives, the government has undertaken a series of benchmarking and learning missions to countries recognised for excellence in governance, accountability, public sector performance and citizen-centred service delivery.
She encouraged citizens to participate in and follow the proceedings through television, radio, social media platforms, district linkages and other public engagement channels that will be announced.
The two national events will be held during the fourth year of the coalition government led by Prime Minister Matekane since it assumed office.
