JUDGE RANTATA ANOTHER ACTING JUDGE

The High Court has once again sworn in another acting Judge in a ceremony held at the High Court in Maseru, thus bringing the number of acting judges of the court to three.

Judge Palesa Rantara took a judicial oath administered by Justice Tseliso Monaphathi. Taking the oath, Judge Rantata promised to administer justice to all persons alike, without fear, favour or prejudice in accordance with the Constitution and the laws and customs of Lesotho.
In his remarks, Justice Monaphathi remarked that the High Court lost judges in the past two years hence their positions should be filled. He stressed that the appointment of acting judges is intended to address a backlog of criminal cases before the court, expressing hope that there will be progress regarding these cases by April.
The newly appointed acting Judge has been serving as a Magistrate and is expected to work together with the other two acting Judges who were sworn in last week. They are Judges Tšabo Matooane, and Semapo Peete who is a retired judge while Judge Matooane has served as a lawyer. They are expected to work on 35 cases selected from Maseru during a criminal session scheduled for February 07 to April 29, 2022.
Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Monday (today) launched interviews of 18 candidates who have applied for positions of puisne judges.
Last year, the JSC appointed two judges thus; Judge Realeboha Mathaba who has been placed at the Commercial Court and Judge Malebona Khabo who is working at the High Court.
