PM LAUNCHES YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane launched a youth development program ‘Sebabatso’ at the event held at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre in Maseru on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Mr. Matekane said with this initiative, Lesotho acknowledges the challenges that youth are facing in terms of unemployment, crime and substance abuse and is willing to take a step towards tackling such.

He said this initiative also comes in as a way of turning around the lives of youth by supporting all their development projects.

The Prime Minister further mentioned that it is important for countries to empower their youth as the success of youth entrepreneurs has an economic impact even in communities.

He added that initiatives towards sustainable and innovative ideas that are aimed at youth development are highly recommended.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi said the agency is appreciative of the opportunity the government of Lesotho has given to them in support of this project.

She noted that there is a need for countries to make tangible efforts towards youth development in helping them (youth) thrive.

She added that it is however important for countries to also consider the involvement of the education system which should consider the changing of the curriculum to that which is more entrepreneurial.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, Miss. Nthomeng Leuta said youth empowerment is not only an economic impact but also a social justice entity as it will ensure that all youth have access to equal opportunities.

She stressed that with this opportunity presented before them, they are going to make an impact which will be of the prosperity of the country.

Sebabatso’s Youth Empowerment Program is an initiative by the Prime Minister’s office. It is aimed at mentoring, investing in youth innovators and creating a national platform for youth to showcase their businesses and talents annually.
