REFORMS VITAL FOR LESOTHO’S STABILITY- SADC

The implementation of Reforms remains top of the agenda for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) quest to ensure Lesotho’s political stability.

This is according to the SADC Chairperson of the Organ Mr. Hakainde Hichilema during his one-day visit to Lesotho on Thursday.

Mr. Hichilema said he and his delegation visited the country to perform the SADC duty of ensuring that member states remain stable and secure to focus on their economic development.

He said SADC has made several attempts since 2012 to fix the political situation in Lesotho, particularly the reforms and agreed that reforms will help towards the promotion of Lesotho’s stability, emphasising that they must be concluded as soon as possible for the country’s stability.

He said they had fruitful meetings with both the opposition and the coalition government, saying they have agreed that reforms must be top of the agenda in Lesotho.

He also highlighted that this issue will further be discussed during the upcoming SADC summit to commence in Angola on Saturday, including elections to be held in Zimbabwe amongst others.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane expressed gratitude to the SADC Chairperson for helping to resolve Lesotho’s problems, pledging that the route to implementation of reforms will start as soon as possible to see them through.

Lesotho’s journey of reforms started with district consultations to the diaspora and other several activities, from the First and Second Multi Stakeholders (FSMS) meetings where comprehensive reforms report covering seven areas being the Constitution, security, the economy, judiciary, public service, Parliament and media was presented to the Mediator, Justice Dikgang Moseneke on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa.
