Honourable Mahao is the Minister of Energy. He was appointed to this position on November 09, 2023.
His Responsibilities include implementing government policies, and to ensure that agencies meet their
goals and purposes within the allocated budget. Furthermore, the Minister shall administer the statutes
related to energy, and oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of agencies under the ministry.
The Hon. Minister is a Professor in constitutional law and has occupied the positions of Executive Dean
at North West University, the University of South Africa and Wits University. He was later inaugurated as
the 9th Vice Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho (NUL). He holds a BA, LLB, LLM, Doctor of
Laws and a Postgraduate Diploma in Conciliation and Mediation. After handing in his resignation as Vice
Chancellor of NUL, he was elected by the All Basotho Convention (ABC) in February 2019 as Deputy
Leader and is currently the Leader of the Basotho Action Party (BAP). He was Minister of Justice and Law
between 2020 and 2021.
He is married and was born on 21st May 1957. He is a farmer and enjoys his spare time at the farm and
to empower the youth through self-reliance programs
