At the 3rd Global Mobility Summit in New York, held alongside UNGA 80, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Lejone Mpotjoana, highlighted the human impact of climate change, noting that worsening droughts, floods, and temperature extremes are driving migration despite Lesotho’s minimal emissions.
He stressed that “the right to stay is as important as the right to move,” and outlined Lesotho’s resilience measures, including renewable energy development, climate finance initiatives, and strengthened policies. He also announced partnerships to deepen research on climate mobility.
Minister Mpotjoane called for a dedicated climate finance pipeline for mobility, debt relief mechanisms, and reforms to global debt systems, urging the world to turn climate mobility strategies into actionable, well-funded solutions.
