CLEAN ENVIRONMENT PROMOTES HEALTHY LIVING-MINISTER

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau says it is the responsibility of all to live in a clean environment in promotion of healthy living.

He was addressing civil servants, business community representatives, street vendors and members of the community who attended Operation Hloekisa Lesotho held in the district on Friday where he said a clean environment and oxygen that is being consumed by human beings, plants and animals should be clean.

The Minister said the campaign was launched at Pitso Ground in Maseru to encourage all to live in cleanliness, saying the government is planning to carry out the campaign to constituencies across the country and to villages to promote tidiness.

He stressed that it is the responsibility of the government together with the community to keep the town clean, saying Mafeteng is one of the towns near the border gate where tourists pass through to places of interest hence the need to keep it tidy.

Speaking on behalf of the Principal Chief of Likhoele, Chieftainess Maletšabisa Seeiso said the nation should not be invited to clean the town as it is their responsibility, therefore appealing to all to keep the town clean.

She called on breastfeeding mothers to stop littering used diapers all over as they contributed to polluting the environment, saying they should keep them within their premises in a healthy way.

Chieftainess Seeiso also called on foreign traders to collect their garbage and throw it to the dumping site rather than keeping it in front of their business thus contributing to an unclean environment.

The Member of Parliament for Mafeteng Constituency No.58, Mr. Moeketsi Motšoane reminded businesses community, street vendors and members of the community that they are responsible for keeping their environment clean all the time and not to clean only during the organised campaigns.

He said he decided to join the Parliament to change Mafeteng town, which is overcrowded with squatter settlements all over, saying they wanted to reshape the town.

On the other hand, the Urban Council Mayor, Mr. Nthoesana Leferefere requested the Minister to allow community councillors to keep the town clean by providing them with enough resources to do their job.

He said the waste management fund is decreasing every year, stressing that this is worse, and the number of people being recruited to ensure a clean town has decreased from 40 to 23.

Mr. Leferefere said the town is not clean at all, requesting the Minister to provide the council with funds to light the streets and construct tar roads around selected areas in town.

Similar campaigns were held in other districts with the same purpose.
