MAQELEPO LEADS BICENTENNIAL FUNWALK

The Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo led the bicentennial celebrations, with a fun walk from Lits’oeneng to DIFA stadium.

Speaking at the event, Mr Maqelepo said that the year 2024 marks 200 years since Morena Moshoeshoe I founded Basotho, following his departure from Butha-Buthe to Thaba-Bosiu in 1824. He urged Basotho to reflect on where they come from as the nation, as well as where they are headed.
He further stressed that had it not been for Morena Moshoeshoe I, Basotho as nation would not exist. He added that Basotho should embrace the type of peace that the Founder of the Nation championed, not only amongst Basotho, but even to other nations. Hence, his pursuit of peace and resolve for harmony are still exemplary to date.
On the other hand, Mr Maqelepo  spoke strongly against criminal activities which seem to be spiralling out of control especially brutal killings in the country. He lamented that brutal murders are not Moshoeshoe I espoused and lived for.
In conclusion, he congratulated the people of Mohale`s Hoek, Majantja as they are affectionately known, for being the second district after Maseru to hold the bicentennial celebration. He said national celebrations will be held in Maseru in October, where all districts will compete with Sesotho games like Moraba-raba and others.
On the same token, District Administrator Ms. Moleboheng Lebele, pleaded with Basotho to go back to their roots, and start loving and appreciating one another more, as the nation’s Founder, Morena Moshoeshoe did.
Commemoration of 200 years anniversary since Morena Moshoeshoe I founded Basotho Nation, was officially launched by His Majesty King Letsie III at the Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village earlier this year.
