FORMATION OF POLITICAL PARTIES A DEMOCRATIC RIGHT-SPEAKER

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Sephiri Motanyane says the formation of new political parties is an exercise of a democratic right as Lesotho is a democratic country.
Mr. Motanyane was responding to a concern raised by the Member of Parliament for Senqu Constituency, also Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation in the National Assembly on Wednesday. He remarked that this is democracy.
Mrs. Likeleli Tampane had appealed for intervention to stop the formation of new political parties in the country.
She said this affects the economy of Lesotho, urging all to assist to ensure that this country’s economy is protected so as to create a conducive environment for the next generation.
She further urged Members of Parliament to stop taking part in such behaviour.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday this week, former All Basotho Convention (ABC) party members thus;  Messrs Katiso Phasumane and Futho Hoohlo formed a new political party named Empowerment Movement for Basotho (EMB), with the slogan ”Sechaba Falimehang”.
The party’s interim committee consists of the founders; Messrs Katiso Phasumane and Futho Hoohlo and members from other political parties claiming to have joined EMB because it speaks their language, and they include; Messrs Phaeea Sebeso, Mammelela Sekonyela both from Basotho National Party (BNP), Chaba Gwele from Reformed Congress of Lesotho (RCL), Nkopane Rangoako, Tsékelo Lekhooana also from BNP, and Ramaqele Sello also from ABC.
Currently, there are about 46 political parties registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
Meanwhile, the country is set to hold the general elections in September this year.
