INCREASE IN TRANSPORT FARES OFFICIATED

On Tuesday, the Road Transport Board officiated the new transport fares considering the inflation rate, which results in a surge in fuel prices and other necessities being expensive.
The chairperson, Mr. Limema Phoohlo told the media that they have agreed upon a 30 percent increment at local and 21.1 percent at long distance.
He said they have decided upon this increment in accordance with the road transport Act of 1981, thereafter highlighted that the new fares shall commence in a month’s time from today which is 24 June.
Meanwhile, Maseru Transport Operators (MRTO) Spokesperson, Mr. Lebohang Moea in April stated that as operators they wanted the new prices to be implemented by May 01, 2022.
According to Mr. Phoohlo, this increase is done so as to keep the transport operation Business up and running. He noted that experts assisted them to conclude on the above percentage increase.
Taxi fares were last increased in 2021 to a fare of M9.00 for a 4+1 cab and Taxi to M8.50 local.
Meanwhile, the Association for School transport Association will also be increasing their current fare by M50 from June 1, 2022.
According to a statement from the Association, this is due to the price increase in the fuel prices increasing tremendously.
