MICSTI MINISTER HANDS OVER POLICE STATION

The Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), Ms. Nthati Moorosi handed over the revamped Lithoteng Police Station in Maseru on Friday.

The station which has been renovated with financial support gained from the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) serves over 300 000 population in the vicinity of Lithoteng.

Handing over the station, Minister Moorosi highlighted the importance of working in a conducive environment to uplift the spirit of police officers in their quest to protect people’s properties and their lives in the advent of a variety of criminal activities.

She indicated that LCA through its Chief Executive Officer is a needed force in today’s changing world of technology.

“While we are in the process of digitisation policy, LCA is a step ahead in implementation, this is commendable”. She added.

She explained that the Ministry is into cyber security law, thus urging LMPS to work harder to curb cybercrime, whereby many, including high profile people are insulted on social media platforms.

Ms. Moorosi added that MICSTI together with LCA will also ensure capacity building concerning computer issues, especially now that laptops have been given.

On behalf of LMPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Paseka Mokete thanked the Ministry and LCA for having seen it fitting to renovate this station amongst the many in need of the same service.

He explained that extending a helping hand to LMPS through Lithoteng police is a step towards improving service delivery within the police.

He appealed to all police to ensure the safety and protection of this new modern equipment. He said they are yet to ask for LCA support in the area of enhancing their skills in the technological as well as digital world.

Also Speaking, LCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Nizam Goolam reiterated that the front desk, floor, roofing and ceiling amongst others have been renovated. In addition, he mentioned that they have also given extra chairs to the station to accommodate the clientele.

This, he said is meant to ensure the safety of employees, clients as well as property in police watch as exhibits.

He articulated that they have also ensured internet connectivity which LCA will be paying for its services for a period of a year as well as seven laptops. He stated that Lithoteng will now serve as a pilot to establish how far LMPS can go as far as technology is concerned.

“LCA has a station based at Ha Abia, where safety compliance is managed amongst others, thus we felt that charity begins at home hence today’s initiative,” he stressed.

Community Councilor for Lithoteng, Mr. Relebohile Sechache said he is appreciative of the work done, saying Lithoteng Police work tirelessly and yet there is shortage of resources. However, he is adamant that this will strengthen the work of the station.

On behalf of the office of Lithoteng Chief, Mr. Mothofela Soro expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, saying electrical cable theft is on the rise in the area, saying with improvements such as these there is hope.

This event saw the presence of Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, Ms. Mamphaka Mabesa, MICSTI Principal Secretary, Mr. Kanono Ramashamole  and his team of Directors from different departments as well as some community members.
