MRS MOKOKO IS NEW RSL BOSS  

The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane announced Mrs. ‘Mathabo Mokoko as the new Commissioner General of  the Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL).

Mrs. Mokoko is the first woman Commissioner General of RSL. She succeeds Mr. Thabo Khasipe who is now the Executive Secretary of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

A media release issued by RSL shows that Mrs. Mokoko is an admitted Advocate of the High Court and the Court of Appeal Lesotho. She is said to have graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the National University of Lesotho (NUL) and also obtained a Master of Taxation from the University of Pretoria.

Apart from working as a private Lawyer, the release indicates that she has also taught taxation at NUL. Within RSL and the then LRA, she is reported to have served as a Legal Officer, Legal Officer Law Interpretation and Senior Manager –Policy Procedures and Law Interpretation.

She also worked at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York as the Inter-Regional Adviser on International Tax Matters, Mrs. Mokoko’s career included stints as the Head Legal and Board Secretary and Manager Legal Affairs and Company Secretary at WASCO and Vodacom Lesotho as per the media release.

The appointment is said to have found her while she had re-joined RSL as the Commissioner Operations Support and then moved to the Client Services Division as the Commissioner of Client Services, a position she held until her appointment as Commissioner General.

Meanwhile, the Agency has learnt that Mrs. Mokoko’s appointment comes at a time when women across the continent were celebrating the end of August Women’s Month.

The appointment also comes at the time when the globe and the continent through various instruments that include Agenda 2030 and 2063 call for the promotion of women to senior positions, in order to close the gender gap between them and men.

RSL has a mandate to ensure among others collection of tax to help the government implement its programmes.
