PS DENIES RUMOURS ON MOTOR VEHICLE DOCUMENTS FOR BASOTHO ENTERING SA

The Principal Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, Ms. Mamphaka Mabesa has refuted rumors circulating on social media regarding the necessity of motor vehicle documents for Lesotho motorists entering South Africa (SA).

Ms. Mabesa denied the rumors, saying there is no requirement for motor vehicle documents at the borders between Lesotho and South Africa and that such information has no basis in reality and urged the public not to be misled by misinformation.

Clarifying the situation, Ms. Mabesa noted that changes or challenges concerning border crossings are always communicated through official channels, hence urged citizens to rely on verified sources for accurate information and to refrain from spreading unconfirmed rumors, especially on social media platforms.

The Ministry of Home Affairs reiterated its commitment to ensuring smooth and efficient border operations, noting the importance of adhering to established protocols and procedures.

Ms. Mabesa urged motorists to travel with the necessary identification and vehicle documents as required by law but assured that additional documentation specific to border crossings between Lesotho and South Africa is not mandated.

She highlighted that the clarification aims to dispel any confusion among the public and reaffirm the government’s commitment to transparency and effective communication regarding border policies and procedures.

It was rumoured that drivers entering the SA would be required to present registration of a vehicle or if the driver is using somebody’s vehicle, then would provide a confirmation letter from the owner of the vehicle, registration of the vehicle and the Identification Document or passport of the owner of the vehicle.
