HIS MAJESTY DISSOLVES PARLIAMENT

His Majesty King Letsie III, dissolved the 10th Parliament of Lesotho on July 14, 2022.

According to legal notice 61 of 2022, this is in pursuant to section 83(2) of the Constitution of Lesotho.

The first sitting of the 10th Parliament was on June 12, 2017, when the new Members of Parliament were sworn in.

During the tenure of this Parliament, Lesotho established the National Reforms Authority (NRA) which was expected to deliver its duties for a period of a year, however, this was extended to six months.

NRA was inaugurated in February 2020 to oversee the implementation of reforms which were backed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to bring about lasting political stability, peace and security in Lesotho.

The Authority’s period expired in October last year but was extended for another six months which ended on April 30, 2022, and was dissolved.

There were seven thematic areas under reforms being; constitution, security, economy, judiciary, public service, parliament and media.

Omnibus Bill is one of major accomplishments by NRA. Omnibus Bill is a result of consultations and debates among members of the National Reforms Authority (NRA) and a wide number of stakeholders. It makes Chieftainship a fundamental part in the development and provides for the basic principles in the role it plays in local and national development.

Members of Senate approved Omnibus bill as it contains crucial issues that need to be implemented as the country is heading for the National Assembly Elections later this year.
