MICSTI, ITU CALL FOR SAFEGUARDING CYBERSPACE

The Deputy Principal Secretary (DPS) in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) officiated a four-day stakeholders training held in Maseru on Monday.

The workshop which is supported by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) together with the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) aims to capacitate participants on how to respond and manage cyber threats among others, Mrs. Lineo Ramabele-Smith has said.

She noted that today’s era of the internet intertwined with technology calls for safeguarding cyberspace, thus creating a safer digital world.

According to the DPS, the four-day training is a readiness assessment meant to empower participants with tools on how to deal with vulnerabilities affecting the business world.

The ITU Cybersecurity Focal Point for Africa Region, Mr. Serge Valery Zongo said this capacity building will include several topics related to protecting critical information infrastructure, practical exercises, and the general situation of the country as described by the ITU project known as CIRT assessment project.

He noted that the project includes the integration of several resources, knowledgeable cybersecurity experts, tools, best practices, processes, robust institutional structure and technology among others.

One of the participants, Kamoho Molapo, an IT person from the MICSTI told the Agency that the government through the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation experienced hacking of government systems twice, a challenge that he said needs to be attended to.

“We are hopeful that the training will equip us accordingly in this regard,” he stressed.

Present at this training are experts in Information Technology (IT) from different Ministries, parastatals and agencies as well as media practitioners
