PM TO ATTEND AFRICAN UNION SUMMIT

The Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane will participate in the 37th ordinary session of African Union Summit set to be held on February 17th to 18th at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The theme of the year 2024 African Union is based on “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to include lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa”. 2024 is the year dedicated to education in Africa.

Speaking in an interview with the Agency on Friday, the Press Attaché at the Prime Minister’s office, Mr. Thapelo Mabote said this summit is an opportunity for the African Union to re-galvanize member states towards the achievement of CESA and SDG4 targets that would be implemented throughout the year 2024.

He said the event is expected to serve as an opportunity to reaffirm the political commitment of African governments to education which aims to encourage the teaching profession reform through comprehensive, quality teaching development programs and strengthen resource mobilization for increased sustainable financing and systematic investment in education, as well as production and synergies between education management information systems and labour market data.

The African Union was officially launched in July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, following a decision in September 1999 by its predecessor to create continental organisation to enhance collaboration and for African Leaders to realize the potential that Africa has and needs to focus their attention on, to fight for decolonization and ridding the continent of apartheid, which had been the focus of the DAU.

The Prime Minister’s delegation to attend this meeting will include the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane as well as the Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa.
